This descriptive case study examines one beginning teacher’s enactment of one high-leverage practice, discussion-based teaching, in order to understand what drives his commitment to ambitious teaching and what knowledge and resources he uses to propel his practice forward. Findings indicate that this teacher brings a clear vision of teaching from teacher preparation that includes a commitment to discussion, collaboration, and engagement. Even in his first years, his practice develops through careful analysis of students’ responses to his teaching and to each other in their learning. A community composed of a former university instructor, teacher friends, and his own reflections support the refinement and enactment of his vision of classroom practice.
