The Role of Religion in Preservice Teachers' Racial Identity Development

Sat, April 9, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D Section D

Abstract

The U.S. student population is more racially and culturally diverse demanding a need for teachers who possess certain skills, competencies, and cross-cultural proficiencies to serve students equitably. With a homogeneous White teaching force, studies on preservice teachers’ racial identity have argued the significance in promoting anti-racist education within a social justice model. However, few studies have documented identities of preservice teachers and their faith backgrounds who attend private evangelical Christian institutions. The mixed method study investigated White preservice teachers’ racial identity development based on Helm’s model (1990, 2005) and their beliefs in working with culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) students.
