Black Economic Solidarity in Education: A Community-Based Approach for Black Urban Schools and Neighborhoods

Sun, April 10, 2:45 to 4:15pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D Section D

Abstract

The purpose of this conceptual study is to explore how black economic solidarity could be employed to equitably support schools and sustainable community development in African American neighborhoods. We review literature on urban schools in black neighborhoods, research at the intersection of urban school reform and community development, and literature on black economic cooperatives in urban communities. To theoretically situate this study, we draw on concepts from solidarity economy. Anchored in a community-based approach, this article seeks to reconnect the centrality of black education to the larger context and struggle for racial and economic justice. Finally, we offer a framework for black economic solidarity in education that supports black urban schools and neighborhoods.
