This mixed-methods study explored differences between rural and non-rural principals in North Dakota. Using a QUAL-quan approach to data collection and analysis, the purpose of this study was to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the rural principalship through the development of an instrument that identifies and measures differences between rural and non-rural principals. Analysis of the data indicated that the rural principalship differs from the non-rural principalship in leadership style, challenges, and perceived success. Findings suggest that training and professional development opportunities need to be tailored to meet the needs of rural principals.
