Shifting Perceptions of Postsecondary Career and Technical Education Among Parents of Secondary School–Aged Children

Sun, April 10, 2:45 to 4:15pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D

Abstract

Historically, perceptions of CTE have been negative, viewed as preparation for entry-level work. Our recent Q study on perceptions among guidance counselors presented interesting findings, contrary to what was expected. Even our professional organizations recognize the need to change the public understanding of vocational education. A careful review of the literature reveals no recent data on perceptions, particularly among key decision influencers (namely parents and guidance counselors). The two research questions were: how do parents currently view career and technical education? And, can we measure if those attitudes shifted following exposure to information on CTE graduates’ wages and career prospects? This study is working towards the creation of a framework through which to view perceptions of career and technical education.
