Most parents of children with disabilities must navigate a complex special education system that requires specific knowledge, skills, and resources. Acknowledging this challenge, the Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act of 2004 (IDEA) set aside funds for Parent Training and Information Centers (PTICs) in each state to assist families, yet little is known about the 100 centers currently operating across the country. We address this research gap by analyzing 10 years of data from one such parent center, the Federation for Children with Special Needs. We find variation in the frequency and type of assistance requested by family race, socioeconomic status, and child disability. The results have implications for how PTIC and local community organization can serve children with disabilities.
