High School Students Making Sense of STEAM

Sun, April 10, 8:15 to 9:45am, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D

Abstract

STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) programs are increasing in U.S. K-12 schools, but there is little research on their effectiveness. This paper is focused on the initial implementation of a STEAM project with a group of diverse urban high school students in a large southeast school district. A case study methodology was used to document students’ experiences and perceptions of STEAM. Research study findings suggested that overall participants were positive about their experience. Most students found that through participation in the STEAM project they were challenged; it was an enjoyable experience; and they were pleased with their STEAM project product. More STEAM research is needed to go deeper into program attributes that facilitate students’ interest and learning.
