Diaries of a Recovering Positivist: The (Un)Making of the Teacher Educator

Abstract

The(Un)Making of the Teacher is a study that explores how a small group of teacher candidates’ conceptions of teaching and learning evolve as they progress through a one-year pre-service teacher education program in an Ontario university.(Un)Making integrates visual research and biography with the intention to mobilize the knowledge to wider audiences beyond the academy. In keeping with this year’s AERA theme, one final output of the study will be a documentary film that incorporates videotaped interviews, diaries, observations, expert interviews, and small group discussions for the purpose of reaching a diverse public audience. This paper explores how the (Un)Making has served to “unmake” me as a researcher and teacher educator by working through methodological dilemmas through collaborative self-study methodology.
