School Counselors in Response to Response to Intervention: Evidence From a National Study

Mon, April 11, 2:45 to 4:15pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D

Abstract

With the implementation of Response to Intervention (RTI) across many states, the profession of school counseling once again finds itself at a critical juncture. This proposal presents data from a national study regarding school counselor perceptions, preparedness, and professional practice in states mandating RTI. Results indicate the importance of the following variables in relation to school counselors’ views of RTI as a vehicle to drive improvements in students’ academic and behavior outcomes: perceived leadership competence, understanding of specific professional roles and responsibilities, and knowledge of anticipated benefits of RTI. Implications for training, professional development, and practice are discussed.
