Tue, April 12, 8:15 to 9:45am, Convention Center, Floor: Level Three, Ballroom B

Abstract

Basing on the hyperpersonal computer-mediated communication model, this study explores the relationship among social networking sites uses’ online misrepresentations (OM), narcissisms, well-beings and cyber relationship motives (CRM). The instruments included “Online Misrepresentation Scale”, “Narcissism Personality Inventory-16”, “The Satisfaction with Life Scale”, “The Positive and Negative Affect Scale” and “Cyber Relationship Motives Scale.” 372 valid questionnaires were analyzed (135 Americans, 128 Taiwanese, 106 Chinese and 3 respondents with no nationality identification). Major findings were: (1) OM is prevalent. (2) Gender and nationality have influences on OM behaviors. (3) Narcissism, well-being and CRM have positive correlations with certain categories of OM. (4) Well-being and anonymity of CRM are significant predictors for OM. (5) Results can partly support the hyperpersonal CMC model.
