The main goal of the study was to examine the effect of parental monitoring behaviors for student’s game behaviors (PMG) on school outcomes of middle school students. Our research team developed a survey instruments on PMG, students’ game engagement, and mathematics performance through an iterative development and piloting process. The research team analyzed data from 355 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students in rural schools in Virginia, the United States. The results showed that PMG did not show significant direct effects on students’ mathematics performance. However, PMG had a significant effect on game engagement that made a significant effect on mathematics performance. The study findings provide practical baselines for research on parental involvement in students’ gaming.
