Housing Matters: Community-Based Housing Programs and Educational Opportunity

Sat, April 9, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D Section C

Abstract

Quality affordable housing can decrease residential mobility that can lead to homelessness; increase access to quality schools and educational resources (such as on-site youth programming and workforce development); improve neighborhoods; and mitigate against housing related health issues such as lead poisoning and asthma that impact educational outcomes. Considering this – that housing effects a child’s possibilities for thriving – this study examines how and to what extent community housing programs cultivate educational opportunity in low-income contexts.
