Comparative Benefits and Outcomes for Enhanced Internships in Small Districts: A Multicohort Study

Abstract

This paper presents the results of a longitudinal, multi-cohort study of the benefits and outcomes of providing intensive paid leadership internships tailored for candidates in different small city and suburban settings. The aim was investigate the impact of these enhanced experiences for participating candidates on their leadership development, careers and improvement work as new school leaders and compares these with similarly prepared candidates who lacked the enhanced internship support. This paper models research on innovative practice (encouraging new internship designs) and use of research as a program development strategy, and by yielding usable results applicable to other similar programs and partnerships to improve leader preparation.
