A Chinese Perspective on Self-Regulated Learning and Motivation: An Interview Study

Mon, April 11, 4:30 to 6:30pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Room 209 A

Abstract

Abstract: Open-ended interviews with six teachers, nine students and their parents were conducted in Mainland China. Based on the interviews it was determined that what is characterized as self-regulated learning (SRL) in Western oriented research resembles but is not identical with what is referred to as Zijue in China. Zijue or Zijue learning occurs when learners work diligently and conscientiously to complete teacher assigned tasks. However, Zijue leaners are also expected to obediently conform their learning to pre-set socially prescribed goals. This study also examined the motivation of Chinese students with respect to socially-oriented and individually-oriented achievement, intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, and mastery and performance goals. Sociocultural factors mentioned by interviewees were reported to explain the findings.
