Leadership Coaching for K–12 Principals: An Integrative Literature Review

Sun, April 10, 8:15 to 9:45am, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D Section D

Abstract

This integrative literature review presents scholarly, peer-reviewed literature on leadership coaching for school principals in K-12 schools. Leadership coaching, although used for decades in other fields, has only recently been incorporated into leadership development practices for K-12 school principals. Despite the fact that many districts implement leadership coaching to address the challenges that school principals face in navigating their increasingly complex roles, very little research exists on this phenomenon. After conducting a thorough search of relevant literature, the authors present two emerging themes in the literature--the process and impact of coaching as well as the characteristics and competencies of effective leadership coaches. The review concludes with recommendations for future research.
