Measuring Students' Use of Strategies for the Regulation of Motivation

Mon, April 11, 4:30 to 6:00pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D

Abstract

Motivational regulation strategies are plans or methods used to influence one’s motivation in order to accomplish a task (Wolters, 2003). This study evaluates the internal structure of Wolters and Benzon’s (2013) measure of motivational regulation strategies using confirmatory factor analysis. Participants were undergraduate and graduate students who self-reported on measures of motivational regulation strategies and metacognitive strategies. The hypothesized six-factor model was fitted to the data and results showed acceptable fit. Results also showed motivational regulation strategies and metacognitive strategies correlated positively, ranging from small to large in magnitude. Overall, there is evidence for the structural validity and reliability of the motivational regulation strategies measure, but additional research is needed to establish its relation with other constructs.
