Assessment Tools in a Virtual Learning Environment

Sun, April 10, 8:15 to 9:45am, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D Section D

Abstract

We designed a virtual hospital and a patient residence house to contextualize student social interactions via role-playing. Students learn through watching a teaching vignette followed by role-playing. Knowledge and skills gained from the platform were measured via multiple-choice questions, role-playing transcripts, and concept mapping. Multiple-choice question results show students in the control and treatment groups gain in learning, although, with no significant difference. However, the treatment group gained significantly based upon the analysis of the role-playing transcripts and concept maps. Strengths and constraints of each assessment tool are discussed and important issues implied are included to help understand social learning behaviors in a virtual learning environment.
