Perceptions of Professional Identity Development From Counselor Educators in Leadership Positions

Mon, April 11, 2:45 to 4:15pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D

Abstract

Counselor educators, like other educators, develop a sense of professional identity through a professional socialization process (Solomon, 2007), and in turn are fundamentally accountable to convey the significance of a strong counselor professional identity to developing counselors; often while in positions of leadership (Calley & Hawley, 2008). Thus, research on professional identity development among counselor educators and understanding how they transmit various aspects of professional identity to counselors is essential for the development of the counseling profession. This study explored the perceptions of professional identity development within counselor educators’ experiences in light of their role as leaders in the counseling profession.
