Doctoral students across numerous disciplines are expected to pursue academic positions narrowly aligned with their specialty areas after graduation (Golde and Dore, 2001). However, the dearth of information on career intentions in academia among counseling doctoral students is a barrier to understanding whether or not the expectation could be the same. Furthermore, it is unclear what other career options, if not academic positions, counseling doctoral students consider pursuing and what factors impact their post-graduation career decisions. As such, this study examined career intentions in academia among doctoral students within counselor education programs as a means to help guide the career decision-making process between faculty and students.
