In this study we investigate the degree of alignment between teacher’s and student’s perceptions of the learning goals pursued on any given day. We observed 58 elementary and secondary teachers in order to understand how teachers introduce their daily learning goals and help students understand for themselves what their learning targets are. We also surveyed the students (n = 1254) to see what they actually learned each day. Then we compared the degree to which students responses were aligned with their teacher’s stated learning goals. The strategies used by teachers to share the learning goals, and the roles students play during this important formative assessment activity, were investigated along with the alignment of student’s responses with their teacher’s practices.
