Sat, April 9, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D

Abstract

Introduction
Deliberate practice is a methodology utilized to develop expertise. Our aim was to determine its effect on academic achievement and students’ approach to learning.

Methods
The mechanism for deliberate practice was Edmodo, an education software application. Over an eight week interval, students were given 40 formative assessments containing 3-8, ungraded multiple choice questions. After each assessment, students were provided with feedback. To assess a student’s approach to learning, the Approaches and Study Skills Inventory for Students (ASSIST) questionnaire was utilized.

Results
Our study’s results suggest that individuals who utilize deliberate practice the most tend to be the highest academic achievers. Additionally, our findings suggest that deliberate practice may facilitate a shift towards more strategic studying among medium-use practitioners.
