Abstract

Online education has been rapidly growing across all disciplines in higher education. Science courses being implemented online at the undergraduate level are becoming more prominent as institutions continue to expand their fully online degree programs. However, skepticism remains toward the quality of online education despite an abundance of literature concluding there is no significant difference in student outcomes between online and face-to-face courses, even in the sciences. Through a review of the literature over the last two decades, this paper provides a comprehensive list of salient quality indicators specific for science online education. These benchmark indicators of quality can be used to promote, develop, assess, and implement quality online science courses in higher education.
