Group coaching is emerging as an approach with strong potential for developing leadership competencies. However, there is little research on its use in the professional learning of school leaders. In this article, we investigate outcome of and the processes involved in group coaching using data from surveys and student reflections from the National Principal Training Program at the University of Oslo. The results suggest that bringing leaders from different schools together in group coaching sessions fosters motivation and promotes competencies resulting in increased self-efficacy and a clearer understanding of their role in their school context. Moreover, the study suggest that theory from the field of psychotherapy can be a useful analytical tool for studying processes that go on in group coaching.
