Impact of Students' Learning and Participation in Teachers' Networks on Representational Change in Relation to Collaboration

Mon, April 11, 10:00 to 11:30am, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D

Abstract

Given the difficulties associated with promoting collaborative practices between students and teachers, a teachers’ network was set up to implement a peer tutoring programme, involving 13 teachers from 5 centres with high numbers of vulnerable students in Chile’s Araucanía Region. It was hoped that the process of training and reflection with an expert, together with the learning outcomes achieved by students, would help to promote conceptual changes among participating teachers. The reading proficiency and comprehension levels of 134 students were assessed using a pre-test and post-test and teachers’ initial and final representations were also assessed. The results indicate that the students' improvements and the collaborative networking promoted a change in teachers’ conceptualizations regarding the need for collaboration.
