Students' Preferences for and Use of Sources Across Print and Digital Mediums

Abstract

Students are commonly tasked with using digital and print sources, yet research has yielded distinct lines of research focusing on preferences for digital sources, use of multiple sources in a single medium, and comprehension of single sources across mediums. The present study integrates these lines of research to examine how student preferences for digital and print sources vary by source type, and the degree to which source preferences are translated into multiple source use when digital and print sources are equally accessible. Results suggest that for undergraduates (N=50), source medium and source type were related for source preferences and time spent using sources, and that students spent more time with and transformed more source material when working with printed sources.
