We used eye-tracking glasses to explore expertise and cultural differences in real-world, classroom teacher gaze. Both communicative gaze (i.e., teacher talk) and observational gaze (i.e., questioning) were investigated. Forty teachers were involved; 20 from UK, 20 from Hong Kong. Half of each cultural group were experts; the other half novices. State space grids were used to analyse co-occurrences of didactic and gaze events. Attractors were identified and their strengths compared across expertise and cultures. We found observational focused gaze (Attractor 1) to differ according to culture and communicative focused gaze (Attractor 2) to differ according to both culture and expertise. Attractor strengths were predicted by expertise for both observation and communication; only attractor strength for observation was predicted by culture.
