Emotions and the Holocaust: Delving Into the Past

Mon, April 11, 4:30 to 6:00pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Room 143 C

Abstract

With the passing of time the memory of the Holocaust is fading. Today young Israelis may be less knowledgeable and fewer young Germans aware of the facts related to the Holocaust and the need to be accountable in preventing anti-Semitism. This research studied the self- awareness and attitudes of German youth (20-30 year olds) interested in their families' past. It also studied their Israeli counterparts who participated in a Holocaust course, and the affect of the German attitudes on the Israelis. This qualitative study showed that the Israelis were emotionally affected by the German youth and felt positive towards the Germans interest in their past. The Germans disclosed empathy and accountability towards the Jewish people and the Israelis.
