Mon, April 11, 4:30 to 6:00pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D

Abstract

The first practical experience in school is said to be very demanding for teachers. There is evidence that the majority of teachers have difficulties in adapting to the challenges of the classroom and report high stress levels. In the present study we investigate the stress exposure and well-being of pre-service teachers in comparison with in-service teachers. We investigate whether we can find indications for adaption to professional life in terms of lower stress exposure and higher well-being of the more experienced teachers. Data base are two diary studies in which pre-service and in-service teachers reported on their uplifts, hassles, and well-being for 14 days. Results showed that in-service teachers reported lower daily stress exposure and higher well-being than pre-service teachers.
