The Impact of Mobile Technology Integration on Elementary School Students' Academic Engagement

Sun, April 10, 8:15 to 9:45am, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D

Abstract

A common assumption held by educators is that technology may possibly promote student engagement, but little research exists to support this notion. Accordingly, the purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to examine to what extent the use of iPads impacted elementary students’ reports of their affective and cognitive/behavioral engagement. Specifically, we explored to what extent the integration of technology affected students’ academic engagement. Results indicated that use of mobile technologies was not uniformly adopted by teachers. Findings further suggested that students’ engagement scores were differentially impacted by level of technology integration. Specifically, students in classrooms with higher levels of technology integration reported higher levels of affective engagement. Implications for research on academic engagement and technology integration will be discussed.
