Digging Deeper: Exploring the Latino Male Achievement Gap on a State and Local Level

Abstract

As a whole, Latino males underperform on standardized tests and are underrepresented in higher education in comparison to their white male counterparts. I draw on previous literature (Saenz & Ponjuan, 2009; Torres & Fergus, 2012) to explore the Latino male achievement gap. I analyze the gap on a state and local level through descriptive statistics. Through the descriptive statistics, I find that Latino males are struggling in the areas of reading and math, while their completion rate from high school has been declining over the past five years. Nevertheless, continued research must be done to build on and differentiate extant research.
