Collaborative University-School-Community Partnerships to Prepare Science Teachers for English Learners

Tue, April 12, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Marriott Marquis, Floor: Level Four, Mint

Abstract

Given the large and growing number of English learners (ELs) in mainstream, content-area classrooms and recent reform efforts and documents, such as NGSS, that promote a vision of learning and doing science for all students, science teachers need to espouse enduring understandings, knowledge, and skills related to teaching ELs and supporting all students’ language development in discipline-specific instruction. This presentation explores the design and impact of one pre-service, field-based teacher preparation program that targets and integrates knowledge and skills related to ELs across four years of teacher education. Programmatic esign elements, candidate outcomes, and lessons learned are presented discussed.
