As the percentage of students of color has increased over the past decade, teaching remains a predominately White profession. We draw on the Schools and Staffing Survey between 2000 and 2012 to portray the dynamics within the teacher labor market that suggest the extent to which students of color will attend schools with a teacher of their same race/ethnicity. Since 2000, we find that Black teachers make up a smaller share of new teachers and are more likely than White teachers to leave the teaching profession. Hispanic teachers, on the other hand, make up a larger share of new teachers and are less likely to leave teaching.
