From Contradiction to Development: Cultural-Historical Activity Theory Analysis of Korean Meister High School Education

Abstract

Meister high school is a representative Korean secondary vocational education. By examining the process of the operation and development in Meister high school by the main subjects, students and teachers, this study attempts to go beyond the limitations of current government-centered discussions about Meister high school education. Within the framework of Cultural-Historical Activity Theory (CHAT), this study critically examines activities of students and teachers in Meister high school education. The results not only reveal structural contradictions in the activities and but also discovers the process of the development in Meister high school education by students and teachers. Based on the findings, this study suggests new directions in future secondary vocational education.
