Making the Visible Invisible: A Century of Poverty Knowledge in Educational Research

Tue, April 12, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Three, Ballroom B

Abstract

2016 marks the hundredth anniversary of the American Educational Research Association (AERA), as well as the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of Equality of Educational Opportunity or the Coleman Report. In this paper we provide a conceptual analysis of poverty knowledge in education research using these two key moments in the history of education research to organize the analysis. Both marked important paradigm shifts in the practice of educational research, how the relationship between poverty and schooling was understood, and the research-policy nexus. We conclude by comparing poverty knowledge in the two periods, highlighting key differences as well as the issues and themes that cut across both periods.
