The Borderless Higher Education for Refugees (BHER) Project is a development initiative that aims to make university programs available to refugees and local host communities in the northeastern Kenyan city of Dadaab, home to the largest refugee population in the world. Attending university or accessing other tertiary degree programs has been almost impossible for refugees and host communities; higher education remains out of reach for most students. This mixed-methods study focuses on a course in primary/junior level mathematics, taught through the BHER program in Dadaab. The paper addresses how border crossing between subcultures influences the preparation of mathematics teachers in the program.
