Examining Transition Barriers in the American M.D./Ph.D. Programs: Perspectives Across Different Racial/Ethnic Groups

Abstract

Although MD-PhD dual-degree training is long, expensive, and competitive, little research exists about transition barriers while switching from MD to PhD and MD again. We interviewed 98 MD-PhDs (students and graduates) of which, 29 (30%) reported transition barriers across all racial/ethnic groups and genders. However, we did not find race-specific or gender-specific themes; similar barriers were reported across various groups, and non-minority groups (Asians and Whites) reported transition barriers more than the minority groups. Individuals faced barriers while transitioning to the PhD-phase, as well as transitioning back to the MD-phase, mostly indicating the cultural differences between the two programs. Our findings draw attention to the importance of developing better supports in the MD-PhD programs to avoid isolation, alienation, and failure.
