Sun, April 10, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D

Abstract

This ethnographic case study was conducted to understand the work of first-generation college counselors of color. The research questions were: 1) In what ways do first-generation college counselors of color advise first-generation students of color about college access? 2) How do first generation college counselors of color foster and promote social capital in first generation students of color? 3) How do first generation college counselors of color see themselves in the role of institutional agents as they build on the cultural capital that students bring? I conducted 10 interviews and a document review. Six major themes were common methodology, common struggles of FGSOC, transfer of social capital, building of cultural capital, impact of budget cuts, and counselor preparation.
