Spatial Knowledge and Creativity in Design

Mon, April 11, 11:45am to 1:15pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D

Abstract

The aim of this exploratory investigation was to comprehend the design process involved in the creation of a unique and functional package from the perspective of an introductory engineering student. In addition, we examined how the design process and/or product related to spatial ability. Spatial ability shall refer to an individual’s implicit understanding about how to engage in spatial and object visualization. Conversely, spatial skill will imply proficiencies developed through formal instruction. This mixed methods study utilizes spatial assessments to characterize students’ spatial strengths and a design challenge to assess the design process. Comparing the two provides insight into the relationship between spatial ability and creative design.
