In this paper, we present a teacher’s adaptive expertise model that demonstrates essential elements for high quality instruction of NGSS-aligned curriculum. This theoretical lens for understanding high quality teaching was constructed and modified using known research on adaptive expertise that considers both teachers’ individual and contextual variables. It was applied in an intervention aimed at improving teachers’ and students’ complex systems and biology content knowledge through computer modeling tools. We first outline the model and then show how teachers vary in their adaptive expertise and how this variation is related to student learning outcomes.
