Academic Achievement, Noncognitive Skills, and Student Success in First-Generation College Students

Mon, April 11, 4:30 to 6:00pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Room 159 A

Abstract

First-generation college students and other socioeconomically disadvantaged groups represent an important population in higher education. Not only are they a sizable population, but their rates of success have been notably lower than other students. In order to improve their success and close so called “achievement gaps,” research must first understand the factors that affect success within this population. Using data from a multi-institutional, longitudinal study of student success, the current study first examines the incoming academic achievement and noncognitive characteristics of first-generation college students. Second, these factors are related to both academic and retention outcomes in the first-year of college.
