This session presents my dissertation research to consider how a group of mostly white high school students used arts-based practices to consider white supremacy. This project involved a yearlong, critical ethnographic, teacher-researcher study conducted at a high school theatre program in a large, suburban high school in the Midwest. As a white English and Drama teacher invested in anti-racist practice, I designed a teaching project so that my students could study whiteness. We used Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) in concert with playbuilding. After sharing the unique theoretical design and practical implementation of this arts-based project, I will theorize both what this project teaches about whiteness as well as critical race pedagogy.
