Student Mothers' Literacy Practices With Their Children: Counterstories to the Language Gap Discourse

Fri, April 8, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D Section B

Abstract

The study investigated how student mothers at a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) approached language and literacy in their homes. Using asset based theories (Moll, 1992; Olivos, 2006), we found student mothers as active agents on how they approach language and literacy in the lives of their children. This research contributes to the gap in research that investigates student mothers in higher education and the role they play in the language development of their children.
