Classroom Climate and Behavior Guidance in Elementary Classrooms: Teacher Candidates Connect Theory to Practice

Fri, April 8, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Room 149 B

Abstract

This study purposed to immerse elementary teacher candidates in current research-based readings on classroom climate and behavior guidance, to have the candidates think critically to determine key themes, and to use this information to collaboratively create observation protocols. The protocols were utilized to observe the practices of mentor teachers in field experience classrooms to connect the readings to classroom practice. Focus group data from this pilot study were coded and analyzed for themes in the responses to the semi-structured questions, and indicated a strong positive response by the teacher candidates to the use of research-based observation protocols as an effective means to connect current research to practice in the areas of classroom climate and classroom management.
