A Guide to Mapmaking: Cartography for Qualitative Research

Abstract

This paper is presented in the form of a curriculum and is designed as a tool for qualitative researchers who are interested in using maps in their work. In this document I present map making as a way to think through questions regarding how and for what reasons we do research as well as maps as the results of research. I propose here critical cartography as a helpful and disrupting force that can propel different way of seeing and showing the world and making sense of relationships that can be useful to anyone seeking to do the type of research that recognizes the complexity of voice and representation.
