This paper examines issues of membership and representation within the field of critical disability studies by employing various models of disability in analyzing the author’s understanding of his/her own disability. In specific, the author questions to what extent one must experience disability in order to legitimately or authentically engage in critical disability studies work. Paradox, notions of fringe membership, and the concept of borderlands may offer promise as the author and other individuals attempt to position themselves within the field.
