This paper is part of a national research project aimed at increasing our understanding about how young people’s learning experiences move beyond school borders through their social relations in extracurricular activities, social networks, personal hobbies, home, and so on. It gives a detailed account of the methodological issues involved in a study aimed to explore how students learn inside and outside high school by inviting them to act as researchers, by researching with them and not on them. Our contribution highlights the complexity entailed in now-a-days youth learning and makes some considerations, formulated as needed fundamental changes in the learning process. Finally it shows the necessity and the difficulty of recognising people’s agency by including them in the research process.
