Abstract

This study explores the different ways in which the notion of multiculturalism in Japan has been influenced by various social and historical trajectories. This paper demonstrates that the notion of multiculturalism in Japan is intricately and deeply embedded in Japanese society, Japanese culture and the Japanese educational system and that this type of multiculturalism excludes indigenous ethnic groups including the Ainu and Ryukyu people, as well as those of Chinese and Korean descent.
