Investigating an Academic Youth Mentoring Program: The Negotiation of Third Space With Urban Adolescents

Tue, April 12, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Three, Ballroom B

Abstract

The purpose of this research for a roundtable research presentation is to examine the potential impact and process of an academic mentoring program on the literacy development of middle school students over a one-year period. In particular, the study explores the academic mentoring program as a “third space” (Moje, Ciechanowski, Kramer, & Ellis, 2004) that merges the knowledge and literacies of the “first space” (family, home, peer networks) with the knowledge and literacies of the “second space” (work, school, and formal institutions). It is through this third space that scholars argue offers the potential for more inclusive learning space for adolescents and those looking to apprentice them into the knowledge and literacies of school (Benson, 2010; Gutiérrez, 2008).
