Research has shown that a morphological production task (MPT) explains unique variance in reading comprehension after accounting for vocabulary, decoding, and processing skills. This prior work accounted for processing skills with a task designed to parallel the MPT but contained no morphology. This parallel task, the orthographic production task (OPT), also explained unique variance in reading comprehension after accounting for the above variables. The present study examines the nature of the relationship of the morphological and orthographic production tasks with reading comprehension in a sample of 305 fourth- and fifth-grade students. It is hypothesized that both tasks will be mediated by orthographic awareness, phonological decoding, vocabulary, and working memory, with the morphological task having a direct effect on reading comprehension.
