"My Degree for the Service of My Community": How Latina/o DREAMers Become DACAmented Activist Teachers

Abstract

This paper provides insight to how twenty Latina/o DREAMers benefitting from Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) become DACAmented activist teachers. First, I highlight the motivations of the participants for pursuing a career as teachers. Next, I examine their activist orientations informing their definitions of activism. The desire to serve their working class and recent immigrant communities was a key component of their activism. The paper is based on the life history interviews of a study on the life, professional, and educational trajectories of Latina/o DACA beneficiaries.
